There are thousands of Americans who are on the “10,000 Steps” bandwagon. But where did the notion come from in the first place? It grew out of the marketing campaign for a pedometer invented in 1965 by a Japanese professor of health science, who believed walking 10,000 steps daily would help the Japanese people avoid obesity. 50 years later, many Americans are obsessed with making sure they get in 10,000 steps daily.
The number was derived by taking the 4,000 to 5,000 steps most people get in a typical day of shopping, working, walking through parking lots, and then adding those to the daily requirement of 30 minutes per day of exercise, which is about 5,000 steps. It all adds up to approximately 10,000 steps per day.
Physicians encourage their patients to walk because it helps reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But is “10,000 Steps” a good number for everyone?
What if I Can’t Reach 10,000 Steps a Day? Is It All for Naught?
What if you are not fit enough to get in 10,000 steps? Does it mean you won’t reap the benefits? Here’s some breaking news about the “10,000 Steps” protocol: it doesn’t have to be 10,000 steps for you to gain from it!
A study published by 59-year-old researcher, Dr. I-Min Lee, found that women walking an average of 4,400 steps reaped benefits too, just as those who averaged 7,500 steps reaped benefits. Here is her personal story:
