Last year, not having a good place to go, I thought I’d have a Tango weekend party here at my place. And that was a lot of fun. Well attended lot of people came. It lasted from Friday till Sunday. A good time was had by all. But I was still looking for another place to do the Tango camping trip.
So, at Tango fest last year, I was visiting with Matthew Micetic. He said I think you should have a Tango camping trip where you go by boat. And I thought well, I’ve got a boat, that’s an interesting idea. I like that idea, but nothing came to mind right away. And then Matthew was still talking, and he said, I go down to St. Helens sometimes and bang. I had that flash of inspiration.
Sand Island at St. Helens, Oregon is a city park owned by the city of St. Helens. I thought, well maybe we could reserve that Park. If we could reserve it, we would be able to use it and plan a Tango camping trip on the island. So, I called the City of St. Helens the next day. They said they were about to lease the Island to somebody who’s going to manage it. Brad Hendrickson who owns the St. Helens Marina LLC, he’ll be managing the campground. Wow, that’s really great. If he’ll give us a regular weekend and I can lease it for the weekend, then we can have a fixed thing and do this repeatedly.
So, I called Brad. I described the Tango camping trip that I’ve been doing for years, and the type of community that the Portland Tango Community is, and the music we like, and all those things, and Brad said that’s exactly what I want to see happen on this island. Whoa good news! So that was six months ago. Last week Brad got the lease signed from the city, and he signed the lease. Now Brad’s got the island to manage.
Brad is very excited that we’re going to be there. We have the first weekend in August in perpetuity starting now in 2019. So, for as long as we want to do it and Brad is managing the island, it looks like we’ll be able to go to Sand Island and St. Helens, Oregon and have Tango Island on the Columbia River.
It’s a beautiful island. It’s pretty large. We’re going to set up a dance Pavilion. There is plenty of camping. Brad will be running a shuttlecraft from the marina to the island. So, people without boats can get to the island easily. We are going to have a good time for some time, with Tango Island, here in the Portland Tango community.
